Dr. Richard P. McLaughlin St. Louis, MO Sept 7-8, 2012
Orthodontic Treatment Mechanics and the Pre-adjusted Appliance
Program Highlights
This course presents a general discussion on the philosophy of orthodontic treatment, including the history of the pre-adjusted appliance system, information on direct and indirect bracket placement, and an efficient method of arch form management. The main emphasis of the course, however, is on intra-arch treatment mechanics. State-of-the-art mechanics using light continuous force systems are described in detail. The six stages of orthodontic treatment are reviewed using a variety of case reports. These stages include anchorage control, leveling and aligning, vertical dimension control, antero-posterior correction, space closure, and finishing. The new Avex appliance systems and arch wires will be discussed in some detail, along with information on exciting new Opal Orthodontics adhesives. This is a practical and a very clinically oriented program that will prove immediately useful for the modern orthodontic practice.

Program Format
• Bracket Placement – We will discuss the three keys to bracket placement (the Andrews references, the bracket placement chart, and the marginal ridges). We will also present on recommendations for direct and indirect bonding, along with the adhesives used during both.
• Leveling and Aligning – We will review the difference between extraction and non-extraction treatment, and make suggestions for arch wire sequencing.
• Arch Form – We will discuss accurate and efficient methods for establishing a stable arch form, including arch wire coordination. The Avex arch wire system will be a focus.
• Vertical Dimension Control– We will review the mechanics of opening deep bites and closing open bites.
• Antero-Posterior Correction – We will present an overview of Class II and Class III treatment options, time permitting.
• Efficiency in Space Closure – We will review the various methods of space closure, including detailed information on light force sliding mechanics.
• Finishing – In this final presentation, we will expand on the important aspects of finishing.
• Matching the Orthodontic Appliance with Appropriate Treatment Mechanics – At each stage of treatment we will discuss the rational for using the Avex orthodontic appliances.
